A brief history of Maurice Porter
1909
1924-30
Born 16th August in Mile End, Tower Hamlets.
Attended Sir John Cass School and London College of Pharmacy to achieve entry requirements for Dental School. Played clarinet at silent films at Hoxton Cinema to help fund studies.
1930
At the outbreak of World War ll, volunteered to join the Royal Army Dental Corps and was initially posted to work in Dental Department at Edinburgh Castle.
1939
Four and half years in Palestine as Officer in charge of Dental Department,
Military Hospitals, Middle East. Ended military service as Specialist Dental Surgeon with
rank of Major.
Entered London Hospital as dental student. Graduated 1933.
12th August married Danuta Monitz in Palestine.
1939-45
1941
Returned to UK and set up dental practice in North London and in Harley Street.
1945
Carried out research into Dental Aspects of wind and brass instrument playing and had many wind and brass musicians as his patients.
1947-86
First embouchure paper published in British Dental Journal.
Wrote “Embouchure” section for Groves’ Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
1952
1953
Boosey & Hawkes published his book The Embouchure, which was
reprinted in 1973 and in Japanese.
1967
Admitted as Freeman of the City of London and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.

Appointed Adviser to the Music Panel of the Disabled Living Foundation, a branch of Central Council for the Disabled.
Appointed Honorary Consultant Dental Surgeon to the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund and Fellow of the International College of Dentists.
Elected Honorary Member of Incorporated Society of Musicians.
Elected Honorary Associate of Royal Academy of Music.
He was particularly emotionally touched, when treating a severely injured army bugler, who pleaded with him to restore his facial musculature and dentition, so that he could to play the bugle again
